Running events are more popular than ever, with more than 30,000 different races being held throughout the country each year.  And the distance with the most participants? The 5K. In fact, nearly 8 million people crossed the finish line in this kind of race last year. So what are you waiting for? Get in on the fun!

A 5K (3.1 miles) is a manageable goal—even if you’re not a runner yet—and you can do an event without sacrificing your entire weekend.

This 5K training plan, designed by Maureen Wagner, assistant fitness director of the East Bank Club in Chicago, will help you reach the finish line of a 5K race in just five weeks. And if you’ve already taken the Mindful 10,000 Steps a Day Challenge, you have a great aerobic foundation to get started. To help support your training and get you closer to your goal, Wagner also shares a bonus tip for each week. Happy training!
