Working the PMA “Triangle”

You need to eat well, get moving and think positively to be the best possible version of you.

I’m always focusing on three things: eating well to fuel my body, training hard, and thinking positively—or as I like to call it, having a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA). To be the best you that you can be, you truly need all three.

Personally, I unlocked a whole new level once I realized the combination is more powerful than the three individual parts. Once you live in the PMA Triangle, you’re not trying to be healthy, it’s just who you are.

You Can’t Out-Train a Bad Diet

I always say that success is 100 percent training and 100 percent nutrition. OK, I never said math was my strong point. But going 100 percent doesn’t mean being fussy. When it comes to food, I embrace a common-sense approach to maintaining a healthy relationship to the food on my plate. That means healthy, fresh, unprocessed ingredients whenever possible, and of course, it also means making them taste good.

At every meal, you should seek out good carbs, good proteins and good fats. When it comes to carbs in particular, save those for after you’ve hit it hard at the gym—and when you’re giving your body a rest, give the carbs a rest too.

Training Honestly

Just like my approach to eating, my training method is also about keeping it simple. It’s high-intensity interval training and strength training to sculpt and define lean muscle without spending endless hours in the gym. Nutrition is incredibly important if you want to get the best possible results in the gym, but at some point, to truly sculpt your body and keep it strong, you have to work up a sweat.

I like to mix HIIT with strength training because strength is about so much more than surface aesthetics; being strong is also incredibly empowering and contributes to overall health.

Stay Positive

I can’t overstate how important it is to dedicate some energy to training the mind as well as the body. That means celebrating the small successes and challenging your negative thoughts.

If negativity starts in the morning for you, find a mantra or chant that helps push those feelings aside. Also, when it comes to planning your days or weeks, be realistic about what you can accomplish in any given span of time, and be kind to yourself if there’s a misstep. Just like eating well and training hard, it won’t always be easy, but it should be fun.

When you live within the PMA triangle, you should be able to find joy in all aspects of your life, including eating well and working out. Being healthy should be a pleasure, not a chore—so find the formula that works for you.
